June 11, 2010 – Part 2 to a discussion about contextualization. You know, a lot of this is solved if you live in a stream of the Church’s tradition. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time.
  • graceandknowledge.comGrace and Knowledge » Associations (and why they might not be as important as you’ve been told)
June 11, 2010 – I understand why some might be reacting against some silly decisions based on associations in the past, but we must be careful not to throw out this consideration. I disagree with James on several points here: separation is indeed important; the Scriptures attest to this. It is indeed better to be safe than sorry on some of these issues, especially music. I’ve just been reading the church fathers on music, and they unanimously condemned music and instruments associated with paganism. Why? Partly, I’m sure, because of the music itself. But also out of consideration for the weaker brother, and for good reason. We would do well to head their example and consider associations. Not all association are dangerous, but many are.
